There was a terrible incident last year in Kalamazoo, Michigan last year. An impaired driver slammed into a group of nine cyclists, killing 5 of them. His trial concluded this week, and after a short deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on 5 counts of 2nd degree murder under Michigan law. Although tragic from every perspective, at least the jury appreciated the value of the cyclist's lives and found the offender defendant guilty of the most serious charges.
The sad thing is, car insurance is only required to register your car in Michigan. Once registered, many drivers drop all insurance. Although this person will spend time in jail, the family of the victims may be out of luck in trying to secure any compensation for their loss.
