Hunter's Creek

That five mile section on Michigan Road from Holland to Strykersville is a blast.

Bicycling has brought me closer to the rich history of our area. On the Hunters Creek ride, near the end, we pass a road on Route 78 at about the 28mi. mark called Schang Rd. Wally Schang was an INCREDIBLE major league baseball catcher who was born near there (South Wales). I believe he played for four World Series Champions and was considered the greatest offensive catcher of his era. He was the regular catcher for some of the greatest pitchers in baseball history including Babe Ruth. He was on the Yankees 1923 World Championship team where he batted .318 for the Series. He was the first in a long line of outstanding Yankee catchers. Wally Schang's statistics are amazing and I would argue that he was worthy to be in the Hall of Fame. He was on the ballot five times. One writer stated, "The only thing Wally's career lacked was the recognition he deserved". He is in The Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. So the next time you're on Schang Road, think of our friend Wally, a true Western New York sports hero!

Greetings! I am considering doing this ride but here is my situation. I have been an avid rider and racer for years. I got plastered by a truck last spring while riding to the finger lakes. I did some limited indoor riding this winter and just got outside on some limited rides. I am not in the shape I was once in but want to ride with groups again. My questions are; What kind of shape are folks in? It has been a cold spring so maybe training has been limited. Is this a no drop ride? The last thing I need is a hammerfest and getting dropped. If it is I understand !

Thank You!

I would expect quite a few ability groups this early in the season. I have done no outdoor riding to date. There is always a faster group and people who have been riding through the weather. Groupings sort out after the early climb of Hunter's Creek. Just pick your own pace.

Nicholas: I won't drop you if you won't drop me. Bwhahahaha! Just wait for me at the top of that very first hill and I'll be okay. On the way back it's all downhill and, if we're lucky, with the wind.
